How to pre-wash fabric properly
Why you should wash fabric before cutting – and which temperature suits which fabric.
1 min read

Nothing is more frustrating than a handmade dress that shrinks a size after the first wash.
Why pre-wash?
Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and muslin shrink in the first wash – sometimes by up to 8%. Finishes are also washed out and excess dye released.
The right temperature
| Fabric | Temperature |
|---|---|
| Cotton, muslin | 40 °C |
| Linen | 40 °C, gentle spin |
| Jersey | 30–40 °C |
| Silk, wool | Hand wash cold |
Tips
- Zigzag the cut edges first so nothing frays.
- Wash dark fabrics and denim separately.
- Iron linen while still damp – it saves time and nerves.
